MCSO Releases Bodycam of Deputy-Involved Shooting on Loop 303 and Grand Avenue

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage of the Deputy-Involved Shooting that occurred on June 23, 2021 just after 6:30 PM.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Wittmann, AZ Emergency Alerts the morning of June 24th, that a uniformed deputy noticed a driver driving erratically with the vehicle ending up high centered on the roadway with obvious damage at the intersection of Loop 303 and Grand Avenue.

“As the deputy responded to investigate and assist, he carefully approached the vehicle. The driver fired one round at the deputy and the deputy returned fire. As the deputy returned fire, three rounds total, the driver fired another round at the deputy. The deputy took cover
behind his patrol vehicle while communicating for assistance,” according to a statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is confirming to Wittmann, AZ Emergency Alerts that the driver, a 22-year-old Michael Gerhart, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy indicated the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“The deputy’s discipline, experience, and incredible instincts are the reason he was able to go home safe to his family and continue to protect our community members,” Sheriff Paul Penzone said in a statement.

“I am thankful our deputy is alive and uninjured during these challenging times for law enforcement and the continued threat and danger in the course of our duties,” Penzone added.

“After further investigation, it was determined that Mr. Gerhart had an extensive criminal history to include current cases with other agencies where he was involved in other violent crimes,” Sheriff Paul Penzone added.

The deputy is currently on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
