FEMA to Conduct National Test of the Emergency Alert System on August 11th

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, will be conducting a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021 at 11:20 AM Mountain Standard Time.

According to a press release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the national test will consist of two portions, testing Wireless Emergency Alerts and Emergency Alert System capabilities. The Wireless Emergency Alert portion of the test will be directed only to consumer cell phones where the subscriber has opted-in to receive test messages. The Emergency Alert System portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions.

“The purpose of the August 11th test is to ensure that the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alert systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level,” the Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a press release. “Periodic testing of public alert and warning systems helps to assess the operational readiness of alerting infrastructure and to identify any needed technological and administrative improvements,” the press release continued.

In case the August 11th test is canceled due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, a backup testing date is scheduled for August 25th, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The test will display: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

Emergency alerts are created and sent by authorized federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial government agencies.
