Suspect Dead after Deputy-Involved Shooting near Loop 303 and Grand Avenue

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is confirming Wittmann, AZ Emergency Alerts this morning that just after 6:30 pm Wednesday, a uniformed deputy came upon a vehicle that had crashed in the median at the intersection of Loop 303 and Grand Avenue.

“As the deputy approached the vehicle the driver fired shots at the deputy and the deputy returned fire,” Calbert Gillett, a sergeant with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office told Wittmann, AZ Emergency Alerts.

An adult male was pronounced deceased at the scene due to the shooting. There is currently no outstanding suspects.

“It looked like a chase. The car got off the ramp, making a right towards Sun City, and hit the median,” Xavia Soto told Wittmann, AZ Emergency Alerts. Xavia Soto recorded shared a video she took to Wittmann, AZ Emergency Alerts.

“The officer was great, he made sure everyone was safe, he did a wonderful job. I’m glad everyone is safe and no one else got injured,” Xavia Soto added.

There was no further injury to deputies or community members.

Wittmann, AZ Emergency Alerts first sent out the Emergency Text Alert just before 7:30 PM regarding a police situation causing the complete closure of Arizona State Route 303 at Grand Avenue.

Arizona Department of Transportation reopened Arizona State Route 303 and Grand Avenue just after 8AM Thursday morning.

Surprise Police Department tweeted warning drivers about the closure and to drive wise.
